The Telegraph looks at garden communities

24 April 2019

Graham Norwood wrote in The Telegraph this week (24th April 2019) that garden communities have been defined as ‘not just new homes, but whole areas in which people will live, work and play.’

His article reported that last month the government chose five more areas to become new garden communities, providing a combined housing total of 64,000.

These five bids, narrowed down from over 100 submitted proposals, join Otterpool Park and the other proposed garden communities being planned across the country, with the ambition to ‘deliver more than 200,000 homes by 2050.’ The article explains that each of these developments abides by ‘strict eco, lifestyle and planning guidelines.’

Graham notes that the concept of garden cities ‘is more than 100 years old, thought up by utopian philosopher Sir Ebenezer Howard, whose Garden City Movement advocated what we now call sustainable homes and lifestyles.’
